In this page we will illustrate how to replace the front brake pads on a 2008 Chevy Silverado 1/2 ton 2wd.

Make sure you have the vehicle in park.  Place blocks on rear wheels, and lift the front of the truck with a floor jack.  Place jackstands under the frame.  Remove the front wheels.  Proceed to remove the brake caliper bolts as shown in the image.

Slide the caliper out and tie it to the upper control arm using a small piece of rope to keep it from hanging on the brake hose.

Remove both brake pads, take note which pad has the wear indicator.  The new pad needs to be installed in the same location.

This truck needed to have the brake rotors turned.  To be able to do this, it is necessary to remove them from the vehicle.  Remove the two brake caliper bracket bolts and remove the bracket.

Remove the brake rotor retaining screw.

Slide the rotor out from the hub.

Compress the caliper piston using a tool similar to the one shown in the image.  Make sure that you attach a clear hose to the brake bleeder as you do this. Place the other end of the hose into a clean container.  Crack the bleeder open to catch the old brake fluid.  Once the piston is compressed, tighten the bleeder before detaching the hose to avoid air from entering the system.

As mentioned earlier, it was necessary to have the brake rotors turned.  If you are unsure whether your brake rotors still have enough metal to be turned and remain within the specs, look at the number stamped on the outer edge of the rotor.  Measure the thickness to find out if they can be turned.

Once you have installed the brake caliper bracket, pull the pins out, clean the cavity with brake cleaner, lubricate the pins with high temp brake lube, and re-install them.  Install the new pads, and apply anti-squeal lubricant to the back of them.  Install the remaining items in the reverse order that they were removed.
