Next step, loosen the lower ball joint nut, don't remove it all the way, leave it leveled with the tip of the ball joint stud.

Next, using a ball joint separator tool like the one in the image, proceed to break loose the lower ball joint from the steering knuckle.

NOTE: In order for us to be able to slide the ball joint separator tool in between the ball joint stud and the drive axle, we had to slide the dust shield off of the axle, next, we pushed the axle in to be able to slide the ball joint separator in place.

If you don't have this tool, you can use the older ball joint separator tool that looks like a fork, just note that using that type of tool will most likely ruin the ball joint dust boot.

Next, remove the nut from the lower ball joint, separate the lower control arm from the steering knuckle using a pry-bar in between the car body and the lower control arm, next, slide the drive axle off the steering knuckle.

Using a pry-bar, pull gently in between the transaxle and the drive axle with one hand, with the other hand hold the drive axle steady, try to keep it straight as it comes out to make sure that it doesn't damage the output shaft seal as it comes off.

Repeat the same procedure on the other axle.

Next, remove the bolts that secure the transmission bellhousing dust shield in place and remove the dust shield from the vehicle.

Next, loosen all the bolts that secure the transaxle bellhousing against the engine block, remove all except two, leave those two bolts finger tight.

Next, place a jackstand with a wooden block under the engine oil pan near the transaxle, place a floor jack under the transaxle, remove the nut and bolt from the upper transmission mount.

Next, remove the plugs located under the driver's side fender well to gain access to the 4 bolts that secure the upper transmission mount bracket to the body of the vehicle, remove the 4 bolts and the bracket from the vehicle.

Next, remove the bolts and the second upper transmission mount bracket.

Next, remove the 2 lower transmission mounts, pay attention to their location, they don't interchange with each other.

Next, remove both lower transmission mount brackets from the transaxle, this is necesary to hace enough clearance while sliding the transaxle away from the engine.

At this point, make sure that the engine is sitting on the jackstand with the wooden block that you placed under the oil pan near the transaxle bellhousing, make sure that the floor jack is holding the transaxle, remove the last two bellhousing bolts that you left fingertight earlier, using a pry-bar, pry gently in between the engine and the bellhousing, the transaxle should slide efforthless.

In this car, there is not enough space to remove the transaxle with the clutch bolted to the flywheel, we placed the transaxle in between the sub frame and the body, and tied it down to keep it in place, since the transaxle was not in our way, we left it there during clutch removal and installation, you can choose to do it the same way, or you can slide the transaxle off the vehicle once you unbolt the clutch from the flywheel.
