In this and the following page we will illustrate how to replace the steering components on a 1979 280 ZX

Before you start removing the steering parts, raise the front of the vehicle and place two jack stands under the sub-frame, apply the emergency brake and block the rear wheels with wheel chucks for safety.

Remove the cotter pins from the outer tie rod ends with needle nose pliers as shown in the image.

Loosen the tie rod end nuts but don't remove them completely.

Using a tie rod end puller similar to the one shown in the image, separate the outer tie rod ends from the steering knuckle.

Remove the nuts and allow the tie rod ends to hand loose.

Remove the lower nut from the idler arm and separate the idler arm from its mounting bracket.

Remove the cotter pin from the pitman arm and loosen the nut but don't remove it all the way.

Using a tie rod end separator similar to the one shown in the image, separate the center link from the pitman arm. Remove all the steering parts as a unit and place them on a work bench.

Lay the old parts in front of the new parts to assemble them correctly, start by bolting the inner tie rod ends to the center link, make sure that you tighten the nuts properly and you install the cotter pins.

Install the adjusting sleeves over the new inner tie rod ends.

Slide the clamps over the new adjusting sleeves.
