In this page we will illustrate how to replace a fuel injector on a Dodge pick-up equipped with a V-6 or V-8 engine built from 1995 to 1999.

The truck we are working on is a 1997 Dodge 1/2 ton pick-up with a 5.9 L magnum V-8.

The truck came to our shop with an engine miss and the check engine light on, after scanning the engine we found the trouble code P0360 : cylinder number 6 misfire. We have experience in dealing with this type of codes on Dodge trucks, and due to their lack of fuel return line the problem is normally a clogged fuel injector, however, we performed a spark test to make sure that the spark plug was receiving a strong spark, we inspected the spark plug and performed a compression test, last but not least, we made sure that the injector was receiving power and signal from the ECM using a noid light.

Since all of these items tested ok, we opted to replace the clogged injector, below are the steps on how to do it.

Before you start working on this task, disconnect the negative battery cable for safety.

To gain access to the number 6 fuel injector it is necessary to remove the air filter box, start by removing the air intake hose and remove it from the engine.

Next, loosen the clamp that fastens the air filter box to the throttle body and remove it from the engine.

To relieve the fuel pressure from the fuel rail, remove the plastic cap from the fuel port and using a small screwdriver depress the pressure relief valve, it is recommended to place a shop towel under the fuel rail to capture the gasoline specially if the engine is warm to avoid the risk of fire.

Next, unplug the fuel injector electrical connector.

Remove the bolt that fastens the fuel rail to the intake manifold on the passenger side.

Using a pry-bar, pry gently on all four fuel injectors located on the passenger side to separate them from the intake manifold. make sure that you clean around the fuel injectors to avoid dropping dirt inside the ports that could cause engine damage.

Remove the metal clip that holds the fuel injector to the fuel rail and gently pry the fuel injector out from the fuel rail.

Apply alight coat of petroleum jelly to the new fuel injector seals prior to installing it on the engine, this allows easy installation and prevents damaging the seals upon installation. Apply a light coat also to the lower seals on the remaining 3 injectors for easy installation.

Install the remaining parts in the reverse order they were removed, when you are done installing the remaining parts, turn the key on without starting the engine to build fuel pressure in the fuel rail, inspect for fuel leaks, if there are no leaks proceed to start the engine, double check for leaks with the engine running, if everything looks good, take the truck for a test drive, it should run smooth without hesitation.
