In this page we will show you how to replace the ignition switch in a 1984-1991 BMW 325, the same steps apply to all E-30 series from 1984 to 1991 like BMW 318, 325i, 325is, 325e, 325es.

In the car we are working on, the ignition switch started malfunctioning several weeks before it stopped working completely, the symptoms were that when the car was parked under the sun,(100 degrees and higher ) the heat trapped inside the car would heat up the ignition switch enough for it to malfunction, all the accessories would turn on, but it wouldn't activate the starter, the only way to get the car started was to turn the ignition switch on and by-pass the starter directly from the starter solenoid.

After making sure that the problem was the ignition switch and not a relay, we were ready to replace it, we have provided all the steps needed to replace the ignition switch in this BMW 325 step by step enhanced with pictures.

The first step required to replace the ignition switch in this BMW 325 is to remove the steering wheel, you need to remove the BMW emblem in the center of the steering wheel

Once the center nut is removed, mark the relationship of the steering wheel to the steering column and pull gently on the steering wheel, it should come off without much effort

Allow the steering column to tilt down and gently pull on the upper steering column cover and set it aside.

With a flat screwdriver, pry gently on the plastic tabs that secure the ignition switch and pull gently on it.

Next, cut all the zip-ties that keep the ignition switch wiring harness in place.
