Nissan speedometer cable
Custom Search

In this page we will show you how to replace the speedometer cable in a Nissan hard body pick-up truck, the truck we used to illustrate the steps required to perform this job is a 1991 4wd Nissan pick-up. The same steps apply to all hard body body style trucks from 1986 to 1996 and Pathfinder from 1987 to 1995.

- If you suspect that the problem in your truck is in the speedometer cable but you are not sure, what you need to do is lift the truck completely off the ground and sit it on jackstands, next unplug the cable from the transfer case ( or transmission if the truck is 2wd ), turn the cable with a low speed cordless drill and have a friend watch the speedometer to see if the needle moves, if it does, the problem is not the cable, but the speedometer drive gears, if it the needle doesn't move while turning the cable with the drill, the problem could be in the cable or the speedometer gauge, to find out which one of the two is the problem you will need to remove the instrument cluster, you will find a step by step guide in this page on how to do it and the steps needed to replace the speedometer cable.

- With the instrument cluster removed, have a friend turn the cable under the truck, and watch the other end to see if it moves, if it doesn't, the cable is broken inside the housing and needs to be replaced, if it moves, the problem is in the speedometer gauge, and you can either have the gauge repaired by a specialized shop or replace the instrument cluster with an used unit from another truck.

- With all the retaining screws removed, pull gently on the plastic cover, slide it out enough to expose the electrical connector, unplug each one of them, remove the cover and sit it aside.

- With the cover removed, remove the screws that secure the instrument cluster in place, save the screws.

- Next pull gently on the instrument cluster, tilt it to one side and unplug the electrical connector(s)
pull the instrument cluster all the way out and sit it aside.

- With the instrument cluster removed, pry on the speedometer cable housing  with a flat screw driver and slide it out.

 - Next, loosen the speedometer cable housing with a wrench and unplug it all the way.

- Next, remove the screws that secure the cable housing to the body , and pull the cable all the way out.

We recommend to replace the cable with a new cable/housing assbly.

Installation is reverse of removal.
