- Lift the truck up with a floor jack and secure it with jackstands, this will give you easy access, place a container under the truck to drain the oil in to, and proceed to remove the oil plug
- Remove the oil filter either by hand if it is loose enough or with an oil filter wrench if necessary.
- Remove the oil filter out if the box, and fill it with new oil, this is done to avoid starting the engine dry after you finish changing the oil.
- Lubricate the oil filter gasket with new oil to ensure that the oil filter will seat flat against the engine when it is being installed.
- Proceed to install the oil filter, if this is the first time you are doing this, and you want to know how tight you should tighten the filter, a good rule of thumb is that once the oil filter is seated against the engine, you should tighten it a third of a turn, if you are in doubt, just tighten it as tight as you can with your hand, as you do more oil changes, you will become more familiar doing it.
- Install the oil plug back on the oil pan and proceed to add oil to the engine by removing the oil cap located on top of the valve cover, this particular truck takes 4 1/2 qts. including the oil filter.
- Install the oil cap back on the valve cover and start the engine, making sure that you have oil pressure, if you don't have a gauge, make sure that the oil light goes off, allow it to run for about a minute and turn it off.
- Allow the engine to seat for a few minutes and check the oil level, it should be in the full mark in the oil dipstick, add more oil if needed.
- Make sure that there are no oil leaks and the oil cap is tight.
- Install an oil reminder sticker on the windshield, this will allow you to know when its next oil change is due again, the recommended interval between oil changes is 3,000 miles or every four months whichever comes first.
