The vehicle we used to illustrate the steps we are about to show you is a Chevy Astro Van, but these steps apply to most GM vehicles, and even other makes and models.

As we get them in our shop with bad fuel pumps, we will document the steps needed to perform this job in different makes and models for you to learn how to do it yourself and save money.

  - 1- Remove the fuel tank from the vehicle as described in our previous page:

   removing the fuel tank.

- With the fuel tank out of the vehicle, use a chisel with a flat end and a hammer, to remove the retaining ring that holds the fuel pump module in the gas tank, ( it loosens in a counterclockwise motion)

2- Once you have removed the retaining ring, move it out of the way and proceed to remove the fuel pump module by pulling it up. ( the complete assembly comes out )

3- Once you have the fuel pump/bracket assembly out, lay it on a clean work bench and remove the fuel pump strainer located at the bottom of the pump by pulling it away from the fuel pump.

4- Next carefully pry on the electrical connector's plastic tab with a small screw-driver and pull it off

5- Next remove the plastic hose clamps by prying them apart with a screwdriver

6- Install the new gasket provided  when you purchased the new fuel pump, and install it at the bottom of the pump, install the new fuel hose provided in the kit in, next install the new pump in the bracket, and tighten the hose clamps.

7- Install a new fuel pump strainer at the bottom of the pump, without a new strainer, the life of the fuel pump will be greatly reduced, so make sure that you don't forget to install this essential item before you proceed to install the fuel pump/bracket assembly in the fuel tank

8- Install the new seal provided in the kit on top of the fuel tank opening, make sure that it is seated correctly before you lower the fuel pump module in place, this will ensure a proper seal between the module and the tank, plus will make installation a lot easier.

Proceed to install the remaining items in the reverse order you took them off.
