The woodroof key on the camshaft sprocket needs to be facing up for the engine to be in compression stroke on TDC, it is a good idea to make a small mark with white paint for easy re-assembly.
Make sure that the distributor rotor is aligned with the number one cylinder plug wire, mark its relationship to the distributor with white paint before removing the distributor.
Remove the center bolt that keeps the harmonic balancer bolted to the crankshaft, it will be easier if you have an air impact, otherwise you will need an assistant to help you to keep the engine fom turning as you loosen the bolt.
With the center bolt removed, you can remove the harmonic balancer from the engine, the best tool for this job is a steering wheel puller, we were unable to use the correct tool because the threads in the harmonic balancer were stripped, we had to use a regular puller to remove the harmonic balancer, fortunately it wasn't stucked on and it came off without excessive force.
Next, remove the two bolts that secure the distributor in place, pull the distributor all the way out.
Next, remove 4 bolts that secure the oil pump in place, remove the oil pump.
NOTE: The shaft that connects the distributor to the oil pump will come off with the oil pump.
Remove the upper timing cover bolts as shown in the picture.
Remove all the front bolts that secure the timing cover in place.
Remove the oil pan bolts that connect the timing cover and the oil pan together.
NOTE: to make the timing cover removal easier, it is recomended to remove at least half of the oil pan bolts starting from the front, while at the same time loosening the remaining bolts to allow the oil pan to be separated from the timing cover using a small pry-bar.
Gently pry the timing cover away from the engine, if you have all the bolts off, it should come off without excessive force.
Using white paint, make a mark in the crankshaft and the engine block to make sure that they will maintain their relationship during installation.
