In this particular vehicle, to gain access to the water pump, it is necessary to remove the air filter housing assbly, start by removing the bolts that secure the housing in place
- Next step, loosen the air inlet hose clamps, this makes it easier to remove the air filter housing.
Remove both, the air filter housing and the air intake hoses.
- Next, place a clean bucket under the vehicle, loosen the radiator drain valve, and proceed to drain the engine coolant, loosen the radiator cap to speed the process.
- Once the engine coolant has been drained, loosen the house clamps on the upper radiator hose, and remove the hose from the vehicle.
- Proceed to release the tension on the serpentine belt by moving the belt tensioner away from the belt, remove the belt from vehicle.
- Next, loosen the bolts that secure the pulley to the water pump.
- Next, loosen the cooling fan shroud and leave them finger tight.
- Next, with a fan clutch wrench, loosen the big nut that secures the fan clutch to the water pump.
NOTE: If you don't know which way it loosens, the rule of thumb is: For older cooling systems that have "v" belts and the water pump turns clockwise, the fan clutch loosens in a clockwise motion.
For newer systems with water pumps that spin counterclockwise, (reverse rotation), the nut loosens in the same way a regular nut or bolt loosens up, ( counterclockwise).
- Next, remove the bolts from the fun shroud, and remove both items at the same time, fan clutch/fan assbly and cooling fan shroud.
Remove the remaining bolts that secure the pulley to the water pump and remove it from the vehicle.
- Remove the bolts that secure the water pump to the engine block, and remove it from the vehicle.
- Next, scrape the old gasket material with a scraper, making sure that all the gasket material is removed, proceed to sand the surface with fine sand paper to ensure that the surface is completely smooth and flat.
- Secure the new water pump on a vise, and proceed to install the new gasket, using a small amount of adhesive or RTV .
Installation is basically reverse of removal, when you are done installing all the items, fill the cooling system to the proper level, check for leaks, start the vehicle, allow the thermostat to open, turn the engine off, allow it to cool, check the level again and you are done.
